Meet Jenna Engledoe of rawjoy a jewellery designer using leather, metal and semi precious stone. The range consists of cuffs, necklaces, wraps, earrings and a new addition to the line is belts.
From very young I loved creating. Art was always part of my life. I attended Frank Joubert Art School in High School and that’s where my interest in product and clothing design grew. I studied fashion design at the Design Academy of fashion and was blessed to win the Smirnoff Fashion Experience Competition in 2003. This only further fueled my interest. However I ended up as a buyer in the corporate world. I liked it but not as much as I loved creating. Jewellery making was always a hobby and I left the corporate world to follow my heart and my hobby has become my full time business now and I cannot wait to see where this journey is going to take me.
To wear rawjoy is to be fearless. To connect with a piece that is an extension of inner self. Its about evoking connection, emotion and passion through wearable art. Each stone is hand selected, each piece with its own unique styling and energy flowing through it. Made from genuine leather, metal and semi precious stone
I think African fashion is being looked at globally with so many creative talents and originality being found here. The challenges are having more local buyers as everyday consumers buying your product in your home country as locally the product is more expensive and it takes a while for the consumer to trust a new brand but its slowly changing. Materials can also be challenging to find locally.
Seeing that I am a jewellery and accessory designer I would say the watershed has been a great triumph for local designers. Which allows a small business to afford this prime spot with many tourists being able to come and see some of the local creative minds all under one roof. It has created more business ventures with overseas clients as well as locally.
